Obama’s drilling moratorium has ties to George Soros

Date: June 22, 2010
Issue: By issuing the six month moratorium on drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, Obama stopped 33 rigs from proceeding. It’s widely speculated that these rigs will go elsewhere and drill, meaning it may be years before they return to the Gulf. One of the firms that services the deep-water rigs is Labonde Marine which has already been contacted by the Brazilian oil company Petrobas with an offer to lease its equipment and move it to the coast of Brazil. The owners wrote a letter to Senators Vitter (R-LA) and Landrieu (D-LA) explaining that shutting down rigs means a loss of jobs to those that service the rigs as well. Governor Jindal of Louisiana estimates the moratorium will mean a loss of at least 20,000 jobs in his state.
Petrobas is the state-run oil company of Brazil. George Soros, billionaire, proponent of socialism, funder of MoveOn and backer of Obama, happens to own a large stake ($900 million) in the Brazilian oil company. Last year, the Obama administration’s U.S. Export-Import Bank loaned Petrobas about $10 billion to drill off the coast of Brazil. In addition, Soros is a proponent of cap-and-trade which would amount to a carbon tax raising the price of oil and gasoline.
Meanwhile, a federal judge will respond by tomorrow to a request for an injunction to lift the drilling moratorium. Mitch Landrieu, mayor of New Orleans and brother of Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA), called for exploration to continue while new safety regulations are being written and inspections are taking place. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-oil-spill-20100622,0,1038308.story
Comment: “This is the United States of America, where reason and sound judgment have always been the foundation of our system of government—not poorly thought-out and capricious reactions that destroy the livelihoods of thousands of its citizens in order to promote a partisan political agenda.” Labonde Marine statement in a letter to Lousiana’s senators.
Comment: Crony capitalism is alive and well in the U.S.
Background and links: George Soros has also helped fund Center for American Progress, mentioned yesterday as offering Obama advice on handling the fallout of the oil spill. Among the advice that Obama took was to set up a commission to investigate the cause of the spill and also to demand BP set up a $20 billion escrow fund to pay the victims. It is now apparent that the members of the commission are professors, an environmentalist and others who detest oil drilling. Not one is an engineer who might actually be able to understand the cause of the explosion.
