Obama EPA pushing out coal as electricity source

Obama EPA pushing out coal as electricity source

The Obama administration seems willing to heap more costly regulations on the American economy just as consumers are paying $4.50 for a gallon of gasoline in some places.  Today the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency  (EPA) issued a regulation that would require any new coal-fired electric plants to emit less carbon dioxide by capturing and storing the emissions underground, a technology that is not yet available to the industry.

Scott Miller, CEO and President of the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity, a group of coal-burning electricity producers, told Fox News, "The latest rule will make it impossible to build any new coal-fueled power plants and could cause the premature closure of many more coal-fueled power plants operating today.”

The new regulation exempts plants that are under construction or in the permitting process.  It also does not cover existing plants which were already hit with mercury emissions and other pollution requirements earlier in the year.  About 13% of the existing coal-fired plants are already expected to be shut down because of the previous regs.

National Mining Association spokesman, Luke Popovich responded to the new proposal by saying , “After Congress refused to pass carbon caps, the administration insisted there were other ways to skin the cat and this is another way — by setting a standard deliberately calculated to drive affordable coal out of the electricity market.”  http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/epa-to-impose-first-greenhouse-gas-limits-on-power-plants/2012/03/26/gIQAiJTscS_story.html?hpid=z

Comment: Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), "So much for President Obama's claims to be for an 'all-of-the-above' approach - these regulations are designed specifically to kill coal in American electricity generation, which will significantly raise energy prices on American families. This plan is the most devastating installment in the Obama administration's war on affordable energy: it achieves their cap-and-trade agenda through regulation instead of legislation.  Today, Americans can be certain that the President is going forward to fulfill his campaign promise that under his plan of a cap-and-trade system electricity prices would 'necessarily skyrocket.'”

Comment: It seems that Obama and his leftist allies are using the global warming fraud to “fundamentally transform” the United States of America.

Background and links:  Coal currently provides about 40% of our electricity and continues to be one of our major exports. Last year U.S. mines exported more than 100 million tons of coal, up 40 percent from 2009 -- and the highest level in 20 years. Both China and India are using vast amounts of coal for electrification as their economies grow. The International Energy Agency predicts half of the reduction in world poverty will be because of coal. (NationalMining Association)
