Moral in Michigan: right to work is the right thing
By Tom Randall
Date: December 13, 2012
We talked with a Michigan Republican state senator Tuesday night as he rode home through the dark winter night after a tumultuous day in Lansing where “right to work” became law and a lawless mob of demonstrators protested it.
The ubiquitous Jesse Jackson had gone to Lansing from his Chicago lair to call for a nationwide strike. James Hoffa was set to threaten a civil war and through the day it looked as if one had already begun. The senator didn’t really need more stress and grief in his life but his courageous vote was sure generating it.
He said, I don’t know that this is an issue anyone can run on. But we did the right thing for the people of Michigan. So, whatever happens in the future, I can live with the fact that we did the right thing.
It’s amazing what can be accomplished when you are trying to do the right thing.
