Obama to enlist public to help push his agenda, a strategy for “success”

Issue:  President Barack Obama and his team plan to keep in place the grassroots organization that helped get him elected. “Barack Obama 2.0” is the name for the plan to use the same organizational skills and contacts to build support for his agenda and help move it through Congress.   According to the LA Times, the group will have a $75 million budget of private funds and build on the 13 million email addresses and donors used in the election campaign.

The group hopes to have full time staff and offices in each congressional district in battleground states such as Florida, Ohio, Colorado, Virginia and North Carolina.  One idea is to use this group to organize phone banks and demonstrations to lobby conservative Democrats to vote for legislation that they might otherwise oppose such as cap-and-trade or nationalized health care.

In addition, unions and other groups who support Obama are already putting their plans together to influence the American people to support Obama’s legislative initiatives.  Such groups include the Steelworkers union, the ACLU, the California Nurses Association and Physicians for a National Health Program. Comment 1: The challenge for Republicans and conservative organizations is to put together a plan to educate Americans on how Obama’s policies will affect their lives and cost them more of their hard-earned money.

Comment 2:  As Franklin Roosevelt told labor leaders after his 1932 election, "I agree with you, I want to do it, now make me do it."
