Democrats are advancing nationalized health care in stimulus bill

Issue: Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), a rising star in the Republican House, said, “What no one is paying attention to in the [stimulus plan] is that Democrats are making a big grab at the health-care sector." The “stimulus” bill passed by the U.S. House would expand Medicaid coverage to any Americans who lost their jobs last year as well as their spouses and children and would continue coverage up to 2011 with no exclusion for wealthy families. Also, in the “stimulus” bill, the federal government would pay 65% of a person’s COBRA health insurance payments for those over 55 who lose their jobs. It would allow people to continue on COBRA until they are eligible for Medicare at age 65. These two plans are estimated to bring 10 million Americans under the federal health care umbrella according to the Wall St. Journal. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123327719403931465.html
In addition, under a provision entitled “health technology” the federal government would coordinate electronic health records even though private insurers are already attempting to set up plans where consumers could compare insurance providers and costs. It is feared that government would then be the only source of publishing and even setting prices for health care plans.
Even before the stimulus plan was considered, Democrats pushed through the State Children's Health Insurance Program or SCHIP under which the federal government will pay medical expenses for kids of parents who earn up to $65,000 per year. An additional 2.4 million children are estimated to enroll according to the Congressional Budget Office.
Comment 1: Just like Bill Murray in “What about Bob?" we Americans are “baby-stepping” our way to socialized medicine.
Comment 2: The Senate shouldn’t pass this legislation without ample input from constituents unlike the hasty and largely unhelpful “bailout” bill that they approved last fall.
Comment 3: Democrats claim, euphemistically, to be the party of choice. Yet under their ultimate scheme of socialized medicine, we will eventually lose the right to choose a doctor, the right to choose the drugs our doctor prescribes and the right to choose from new medical technologies. We will soon be picking up our medical permission slips at the Ministry of Wellness.
